A town without police?

When police officers are killed, police asks who will keep us safe?

In an open conversation, Constable Lucky Matome, stationed at the Tarlton police station as the spokesperson, sat down with the News to talk about police killings and why the community should care.

“An attack on the police is an attack on the state and our nation,” Matome said.

“I know government and the South African Police Service are taking drastic measures to arrest and bring the suspects of these criminal acts to justice. Nothing can justify the criminal acts associated with these crimes.

“We call on all South Africans to reject violence and take a stand against the killing of officers. Criminals strive in communities where their actions are tolerated. Together, let us stomp out crime wherever it resides.

“We call on the public to assist the police in performing their duties by joining the Community Policing Forums where there is constant liaison between the community and police officers. We also want to encourage the community to report crime, even if you do it anonymously. Call 08600 10 111 or phone your respective stations.”

A while after meeting Matome, the News reported on the execution-style killing of Khulekani Mpanza by police officers in Lewisham in October. The public responded mostly in support of Mpanza’s death, yet the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said that he was indeed wrongfully executed and the officers were accused of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
