A hijacked vehicle crashed through a wall after a suspect jumped out of the moving truck.

A criminal met his match this morning (13 October) following a foiled armed hijacking incident in Monument.

The driver of a stationary Elite courier delivery truck was approached by an armed hijacker in the Noordheuwel shopping center’s parking lot at around 9am.

The armed suspect instructed the driver to get out of the vehicle and hand over the keys while pointing a gun to his head.

The hijacker then speed off out of the parking lot not knowing the courier truck was escorted by an unmarked vehicle from Babelela Security who immediately gave chase.

The driver of the security vehicle cornered the hijacker on the corner of Gerrit Maritz and Van Oord Streets when the suspect jumped from the moving vehicle causing it to crash through a residential wall.

The suspect, who obtained an injury from jumping out of the moving vehicle, then made a run for it towards Johan Jonker Drive, but quickly returned after being cornered for a second time.

The security guard cornered the hijacker in Van Oord Street where he was placed under citizen arrest.

Police, armed responses and the owner of the recovered hijacked vehicle were deployed to the scene after the security guard reported the incident to the control room.

The suspect was handed over to the police who were on the scene to take statements to open a case of attempted hijacking and pointing of a firearm.
