This year 70 malls participated in support of kids with cancer and made R1,5 million.

About 2 500 colourful cupcakes enchanted Key West shopping centre’s food court on National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer in September.

Cupcakes of Hope initiated the National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer and plans to donate some of the proceeds to non-profit organisations that help cancer patients. The rest would be used to help pay cancer patients’ medical costs.

Cupcakes of Hope is a non-profit organisation that aims to create awareness of the early signs of childhood cancer and to raise funds to support families that have been affected by childhood cancer.

September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and these events form part of their main fundraisers.

These funds are used to help with medical expenses and other day-to-day costs such as transport, food hampers, school fees, birthday celebrations etc.

Bakers and volunteers, called Cupcake Angels, took to Key West and displayed an impressive 2 500 cupcakes for sale. Key West was one of 70 shopping centres nationwide that participated in the event in support of children with cancer.

Mr South Africa, Armand du Plessis also paid the Angels a visit and posted on Instagram saying it is a worthy cause to support.

Mari Barnard, a Cupcake Angel, baked over 200 cupcakes this year and also volunteered at the mall.

“These cupcakes are truly beautiful and the sweetest way to make a difference, but after baking over 200 cupcakes, I really can’t see myself eating another one just yet,” she laughed.

One of these little edible artworks would have cost you R10 and created awareness of the early warning signs of cancer.
