[PHOTOS] New Pinehaven Hospital treats first patient

The New Netcare Pinehave Hospital, close to the infamous 'intersection of death', treated its very first patient this morning.

The long-awaited new 100-bed Netcare Pinehaven Hospital opened its doors to the public and its first patient on Wednesday.

Local hairdresser Carina Pretorius was brought to the emergency ward at around 8am when Doctor Danie Erasmus, who happens to be a friend of hers, tended to her. Even though she was in pain, Carina told the News she felt she was going to be alright. She said the new hospital’s treatment doesn’t seem any different from that at other hospitals.

Safiyya Mohamed, the hospital’s client liaison officer, commented that is exactly what Netcare hospitals strive to do.

“Our employees aim to implement our values that include care, dignity, participation, truth and passion in their work,” she said.

Motlalentoa Motsoane, general manager for Netcare Pinehaven and Krugersdorp hospitals, explained that the new hospital will take some pressure off Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital.

Care, dignity, participation, truth and passion are the five Netcare values these nurses aim to implement in their service.

“Even though this hospital specialises in orthopedic surgery, it is able to tend to many illnesses,” he said.

According to Safiyya, if you seek medical attention at the new hospital, you most likely will not be transferred to another hospital. It is a multidisciplinary hospital where even an emergency caesarean section can be performed.

As for the hospital’s close proximity to the infamous ‘intersection of death’, Safiyya believes it would shorten the response time to accidents.

In terms of the hospital’s interior, natural light streams through the floor-to-ceiling windows and reflect off the signature vinyl floors. The walls are decorated with photographs of scenes in and around Krugersdorp and the Cradle of Humankind. A live garden wall is displayed over two levels at the waiting area.

“Natural surroundings is a general theme throughout the hospital,” Motlalentoa explained.

Carel Lubser, technical director at Emke, which is the main construction contractor, told the News the hospital is very family-oriented and truly fits in with the surroundings. The hospital also will aid doctors in training with their state-of-the-art live surgery – surgery that is recorded and streamed live to a boardroom so other doctors can be educated while the surgery is being done.

This 8 000 square metre structure took just over a year to build and 150 nurses will tend to patients in various wards. If you are one of them, Motlalentoa reassures you would receive quality treatment while you recover.
