Loud music disrupts town

Loud music could be heard kilometres away from Coronation Dam this weekend.

The annual GoWest! Music Festival at Coronation Dam had Krugersdorpers covering their ears until the early hours of Sunday morning. The music blared so loudly one could here it as far as Krugersdorp West.

Residents took to Facebook to ask whether the music would stop and why was it so loud. One resident commented that the hospitals close to where the festival was held, must have been inconvenienced equally.

Some heard the music until 3am on Sunday, long after the Springbok victory celebrations were over.

The festival, which showcased artists such as AKA and Mafikizolo, is an annual event that costs R180 per person to attend. It starts at 11am and according to the GoWest! website it is supposed to end at 11.55pm. It was approved by Mogale City and they had set a 2am cut-off time.

The festival is also a West Rand District Municipality event that forms part of a range of Heritage Month events such as the Color Run™ and Block Party.

Earlier this month, the WOW (Wilde Opskop in die Weste) Music Festival, which showcased artists such as Steve Hofmeyr and Karlien van Jaarsveld, was held in Randfontein. Mara Conradie who is the Randfontein Rugby Club manager told the News she received no complaints about noise nuisance related to the event.

“But the loud music was turned down by 6pm, so it did not continue throughout the night,” she said.

In terms of the law, the Environment Conservation Act states that noise nuisance – when it is so unbearable you feel like banging your head against the wall – is illegal irrespective of the time of day or night. Mogale City’s by-laws, however, do not state a certain time when loud noise becomes illegal.
