The night of horror: victims tell of Noordheuwel armed robbery

Couple was tied up in their Noordheuwel home. They live to tell the tale.

“They forced my wife into the bath where they sat on her and bumped her head against the bath.”

Gert and Daleen Booysen’s calm Friday afternoon (18 September) took a turn for the worst when they were tied up with electrical cables in their Noordheuwel home by armed robbers.

EPR Security services tended to Gert and Daleen after they were found tied up and Gert had several stab wounds.

Daleen, who still was recovering from shock, spoke to the News about that afternoon. She said she took a nap after work and Gert left to go to the shop.

Daleen suddenly was awakened by a man holding a knife against her, ordering her out of bed.

“He told Daleen if she wanted to live, she should cooperate,” Gert said.

The robbers, believed to be three men, allegedly tied Daleen’s hands and feet and put her in the bathtub where they intimidates and assaulted her.

When Gert arrived at home, the men were waiting for him in his living room.

Gert explained that the robbers used the knives from their kitchen and the electrical chords from their appliances.

“They tackled me to the ground where they stabbed me multiple times,” he said.

One of the stab wounds were four centimetres deep, barely missing Gert’s kidneys.

A struggle between Gert and the robbers ensued, which led to him being tied up between two pieces of furniture, disabling him to move. Gert eventually lost consciousness.

Gert was woken up by Daleen telling him Sector 4 Community Policing Forum and EPR members were at their front door.

The robbers already had left, taking the couple’s car, their computers, cellphones, tablets and even their house keys, which made it difficult for them to open their door for the help that arrived. Daleen then pressed the panic button.

Sector 4 members and the police launched a search for the robbers and the stolen vehicle. Two hours later the vehicle was recovered in Soweto.

Netcare 911 tended to Gert’s stab wounds before transporting him to hospital where he received further treatment.

Gert retrieved his car from police on 22 September and told the News he plans on bettering the security in his already-secured home.

“I need the panic button to go off as soon as the television is dismantled, because it’s impossible to reach the button when the robbers already have you tied up.”
