Mob justice served to armed suspect

Suspect found on the ground tied up and bleeding with a loaded revolver lying next to him after the community took justice into their own hands.

A 37-year-old suspect was arrested following an attack and citizen arrest by members of the Soul City community.

The arrest follows after the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot people with an unlicensed firearm after which members in the community took matters into their own hands by assaulting the victim and successfully placing him under citizen arrest.

“According to a ward committee member the suspect was in possession of unlicensed firearm which he used to threaten everyone. Members of the community then attacked him with stones and overpowered him. He was further assaulted and disarmed,” Kagiso spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya commented.

Kagiso police responded to a call out of complaint of mob justice and immediately investigated the matter.

Upon arrival at the scene of crime they found the suspect lying on the ground and bleeding with his hands and feet bound.

Next to him was a revolver which members of the community claimed belonged to the suspect which was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

“Investigation revealed that the suspect is also wanted for murder, which he allegedly committed in Soul City in August with the same firearm. It was also determined that the loaded revolver was also reported stolen in Krugersdorp,” Sibiya explained.

The suspect was taken to the local hospital in a serious but stable condition and is currently under police guard.

He has been charged with unlawful possession of unlicensed firearm and will appear in court soon.
