Three hijackers arrested

A pretend customer led a vehicle owner into a trap.

Police closed in on hijackers in Tshepisong following a complaint.

On 20 August at 5am three suspect aged between 31 and 48 years were arrested for hijacking and armed robbery.

It is alleged that the complainant’s car was parked at Langlaagte on 19 August at about noon in Albertina Sisulu Drive when an unknown man suddenly approached him.

“A man wanted to hire the complainant’s bakkie since it was written ‘Car for Hire’. The complainant together with his colleague and the suspect then drove towards Kagiso,” Warrant Officer, Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso police station, said.

Upon arrival in Tshepisong the suspect, pretending to be interested in hiring the vehicle, told the complainant to stop the car.

As soon as the complainant had stopped the vehicle, four unknown men appear. Two of the suspects were each armed with a hammer and a knife respectively. It is believed the suspects confronted and threatened the complainant while demanding the keys to the vehicle. They thereafter drove off in the complainant’s Kia LDV leaving him and his colleague stranded on the scene.

“The complainant immediately reported the matter to the police and the search for the four suspects was launched. Three of the suspects were cornered and arrested early on the morning on 20 August in Tshepisong and later detained at Kagiso police station. Police are still searching for the fourth suspect and the hijacked bakkie.”
