Police warning: property marking real

Police warn of an increase in burglaries and say, among other things, that marking is a real criminal method.

Residential and commercial burglaries are increasing in and around Krugersdorp and police suspect that most burglary methods in Krugersdorp specifically, are the same.

“Normally we have cases of armed robberies reported where there is no getaway vehicle,” Constable Lucky Matome said.

“Residents and business owners must see to it that there is proper lighting around their property, especially in the countryside.”

Matome gave these following tips on insuring your safety:

• If you are able to, install a CCTV (closed-circuit television) camera.

• Make sure your electrical gate is properly on its rails and that the motor is functional.

• Number your house or plot so that police can easily find it.

• If you go on holiday, give your contact details to the closest police station.

• Lock away your valuables in a mounted safe.

• Have the police, community policing forum or security company’s number on your person.

Matome added that property marking is a real problem the police and residents are confronted with. He told the News that a group of recruiters usually scout a potential property and if they notice there is no movement, by ringing the doorbell, they mark it.

“They mark it with anything ranging from plastic bottles to paper bags.”

If you need police assistance in a burglary contact Constable Segakweng, the Tarlton Sector manager, on 071 675 7083.
