Plan of action in place to fight drugs

Local government together with various local organisations plan to take the drug epidemic head on with this campaign.

Various departments along with organisations met up on a busy street corner to educated the public about the use of illegal substances.

Members from the Department of Social Development, Community Development Workers, Social Upliftment, Department of Health together with organisations loveLife and Asilweni Cleaning Streets and local government Mogale City Public Safety and the Traffic Department set up a gazebo in Krugersdorp West to create awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, especially since the area is known for its illegal trade.

The aim of the initiative was to try and move forward into a drug-fee society.

The members approached the public to tell them more about drugs, what to look out for and how the different departments can assist in recovering from the epidemic that seemed to have taken over this town.

The departments decided to take hands in the battle against drug abuse and to get the message across about the intensity of the drug epidemic not only in Sivewright Street, but in Krugersdorp’s poorer communities too.

“These places are drug infested, as a lot of people from the area are abusing drugs or trading it,” Ntombi Zibi, representing the Department of Social Development, said.

The stakeholders under the umbrella name the Krugersdorp Local Drug Action Committee (KLDAC) are also planning to visit other problem areas in Krugersdorp.

Pamphlets with information and contact details about the different departments along with rehabilitation centers were distributed on the day.

“Social Development is the starting point for recovery. We are fine without drugs and we aim to create a community free from drugs,” Zibi said.
