Parastatal’s lack of social responsibility

Numerous requests from the councillor and community have fallen on deaf ears.

It is highly disappointing when parastatals such as Telkom have properties in residential areas but do not fulfill their obligation to the community in which they are situated.

This is the view of Lynn Pannall, DA councillor for Ward 21.

The Telkom Technical Depot in Ward 21 is at the corner of Nupen Road and Lindhout Street in Noordheuwel. The hilly terrain of Noordheuwel is perfect for the height required for such an installation. However, the beautifully trimmed residential gardens and exquisite natural beauty of the ridge are spoiled by the unsightly littered sidewalks around the Telkom facility.

The area behind the Telkom facility, still within its premises, is overgrown and used by criminals as a hideout. Residents attribute the increase in crime to this factor.

Numerous requests from the councillor and community to Telkom have fallen on deaf ears. Its empty promises to clean up the sidewalks and dangerous alley have not materialised.

The News approached Telkom’s Communications Department for comment on Pannall’s statement. However, after numerous extensions for their comment deadline were given, Telkom still failed to comment.

“Telkom would show respect for its neighbours by cleaning the eyesore,” remarked Pannall. “It is not the municipality’s responsibility to clean the area continually and it is unfair to expect residents of Lindhout Street and Nupen Road to keep it in a neat and trim state. The service Telkom provides also should include looking after its own backyard,” Pannall concluded.
