CPF properly prepared

Members from all the CPFs came together to improve their skills with DNA and evidence training.

A special rendezvous for crime fighters of the greater Krugersdorp community was held at Monument Primary.

Members of all the Community Policing Forums (CPFs) in Krugersdorp met up for a DNA evidence training session, which was initiated by Richard and Evette Starke and other patrol members.

The school hall was packed and attentive members learned valuable information about being a first respondent on a crime or accident scene.

David Swanepoel, who represented the DNA Project, discussed the dos and don’ts at a scene and how important it is for the members to work as a team to avoid missing key elements.

The different types of crime scenes were explained in an interactive conversation with the CPF members.

Anyone entering a scene should treat it with the utmost respect as evidence easily can be contaminated.

Swanepoel explained that evidence is a silent witness to a crime and therefore should not be contaminated nor tampered with.

Sources of DNA types found from the body were explained and the role it may play into solving a crime.

Steps to follow when arriving at a crime scene firstly would be to contact the police, and take note of the scene for further questioning.

Protective gear such as ‘glows’ should be worn when handling evidence or treating a patient.

It is important at this stage to assign helpers to the scene and limit access to the area by barricading off the scene.

Some important tips to remember:

D: don’t touch

N: note, record and observe

A: assist police officers

C: careful for contamination

S: secure the crime scene

I: insist no one interferes
