Maragon king of the chess board

Maragon chess players are moving to the top.

Maragon Private Schools’ chess stars are making the right move towards greatness.

In May the primary school’s chess teams played in the Roodepoort Championships.

The under 9 and 11 teams both won their sections. Each player received a gold medal and qualified to play in the D12 league.

“We are very proud of all our players who are showing great skill in this game,” commented Belinda Espag, Maragon marketing manager.

The under 11 boys team scored a fifth place and although the under 13 girls team did not get a place, they will be going through to the D12 league.

In early June, Maragon hosted Clash of Kings, a friendly tournament that saw 113 players participating.

Maragon, The King’s School West Rand, Trinityhouse Little Falls, Horison and Muldersdrift joined in the chess fun.

Daniel Rautenbach received a bronze medal in the under 7 division, and Jason de Kock received a silver in the under 9 division.

Juveshan Pather walked away with the gold and Kerri-Ann Naicker took the silver in the under 11 division.

Maragon won, with The King’s School West Rand and Horison following closely behind.

“We are looking forward to playing in the Johannesburg North West Tournament in the third term. Keep practicing,” Belinda said.
