Maragon crowned D12 hockey champs

There is no stopping the Maragon hockey team who walked away as the D12 champs.

After four months, approximately 125 hours of training and 41 games, Maragon Private Schools’ boys first hockey team claimed victory.

The winning recipe comprised a mix of talent and motivation by the players, a skilled coach and a slave-driving manageress.

The team won the D12 league finals on 29 May, by beating Hoërskool Florida 3-1 in a tough nail-biting game.

Undefeated in the league, the boys scored a total of 33 goals and conceded only four.

The league consists of Hoërskool Randburg, Hoërskool Linden, Hoërskool Florida, Hoërskool Bastion, Hoërskool Roodepoort, The King’s School West Rand, Allen Glen High School and Westridge High School.

In addition to the D12 district league, the Maragon boys hockey teams also participated in the Southern Gauteng league in which they played against big schools such as Parktown Boys’ High School, Waterstone College, Hoërskool Monument, Jeppe High School for Boys, Rand Park High School and Bryanston High School.

As if that is not enough, the team also played in the Beaulieu and Kearsney festivals, five friendly derbies and the Aitken provincial tournament.

“It very soon became clear that this team was not to be underestimated and the season was filled with loads of fun, hard work, commitment, big hearts, passion and a willingness to learn. They are one team with one dream,” says Belinda Espag, marketing manager for Maragon.
