Mob justice meted out against alleged murderer

An alleged murderer was beaten to death by the community.

After two murders had been reported in the Soul City area in Kagiso this past weekend, residents of an informal settlement near West Village decided to take the law into their own hands .

It is alleged that the first murder took place on Friday evening 29 May.

A man allegedly stabbed and killed a 30-year-old Lesotho national while they were enjoying a few beers at a local tavern.

The victim was rushed to Leratong Hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

“The suspect in this case is still at large,” commented Captain Appel Ernst from the Randfontein Police Station.

The second murder was reported at the Kagiso Police Station two days later on 31 May.

“It is alleged that the residents of the Soul City area went to the residence of a 30-year-old male, where he allegedly became the victim of mob justice,” she said.

A brutal attack using sticks, stones and concrete blocks caused his death. His shack was set alight and burned to the ground.

Unconfirmed information points to the mob justice possibly being linked to the first murder.

“The investigation receives priority and the investigating team will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book.”

Brigadier Henry Mollegai, the station commander, assured Kagiso residents that the investigation was top priority and condemned the senseless killings.

A follow-up report with photos and CCTV footage will be published soon.
