Seerane’s council has big plans for city

During his State of the City Address, Mogale City's Executive Mayor shared his big plans for the city.

Councillors and other municipal figures stepped out in style for this year’s State of the City address in the Krugersdorp Town Hall.

What looked like a red-carpet event with hats and evening dresses galore soon turned out to be cultural showcase as it was described on Facebook, with sangomas and unanswered questions about dropped developments and upgrades.

A beautiful sight each year is Mogale City’s Public Safety officials marching Executive Mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane to his post.

In his address delivered to a full house on 27 March, Seerane revealed that R3,5 billion will be allocated to an alternative energy plan that is on the cards for Mogale City.

Also being planned is a new power plant at the Luipaardsvlei landfill site set to generate more environmentally friendly alternative energy.

“The Mayor reported that through a partnership with Blue Waste the municipality will be able to generate 72MWh from 550 000 tons of waste per year,” commented Mogale City spokesperson Nkosana Zali.

Furthermore, the municipality aims to support the development of a large-scale solar energy project in Fariahville that can produce enough energy to support approximately 20 000 homes.

“In addition to the accolades we receive for being an efficiently run municipality, we would like to add a feather in our cap as the greenest city in South Africa,” said Seerane.

The long-awaited Leratong Nodal Development will receive R1,5 billion while the R1,2 billion project of the Avianto mixed development in Muldersdrift is under way. A further R10,5 billion will go to the Lanseria Airport City and logistics hub development, and R350 million towards the construction of the Netcare Hospital planned for Pinehaven.

R500 million will go towards the Rangeview development to take off in the course of this year, followed closely by the Noordeheuwel Development; however it is unclear what type of development the Mayor is referring to, whether it be land, infrastructure or roads.

“Eskom is investing R127 million in strengthening and refurbishment projects in Mogale City, the anchor of the envisaged West Rand Metro, and will assist the municipality with electrification projects in the informal settlements that will start in Matshelapata in Tarlton,” said Zali.

The Mayor briefly touched on the Bob van Reenen Stadium, stating government had been approached for additional funding.
