New eyes to keep crime in check

West Village residents had enough of crime and alleged drug dealings in the area – they started their own neighbourhood watch.

Residents from West Village are proud to announce they have taken initiative to ensure their area is safer to live in.

Gary Badenhorst, chairperson of the newly established West Village Neighbourhood Watch said they as residents are fed up with the ongoing crime and alleged drug dealings taking place in the area. He said they had no choice but to get involved.

“We now are patrolling the roads day and night and already have had a number of successes such as eliminating alleged drug houses and drug dealing spots. We are also keeping an eye on the people who drive in and through West Village.”

Gary Badenhorst, West Village Neighbourhood Watch chairperson speaking:

He said since the neighbourhood watch’s inception in January the amount of house robberies and drug dealings in the area have declined drastically.

Together with the Krugersdorp Drug Task Team and Sector 5 Community Policing Forum they have managed also to close down an alleged drug lab that manufactured Gamma Hydroxybutyrate, which is a central nervous system depressant also known as a ‘club drug’ or ‘date rape’ drug that is abused by teens and young adults at bars, parties and clubs.

Badenhorst said they are a registered neighbourhood watch that has everything, including their constitution in place.

Altogether 20 residents are keeping an eye on the about 300 other residents on a voluntary basis in a bid to make them feel at ease.
