Witchcraft altar discovered in Lewisham

"You must knock before you go there," warned an occupant.

During a joint operation of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 9 members and local police in a routine crime-prevention raid, they got more than they bargained for when searching for drugs.

The aim of the operation on 8 January was to search three hot spots in the area for illegal substances and stolen goods.

The first house had double locks, making it difficult to gain access to the property. The second house was clean.

At the third house, as they gained access to the property along with the police, CPF members cornered four occupants who attempted to flee.

They searched the house and found what looked like a witchcraft alter in one of the outside rooms.

“You must knock before you go there,” warned one of the occupants.

The strange-looking alter is approximately 1,5 metres tall with animal-like faces carved out of wood.

Lit candles were at the alter with strong incense burning on the side.

An item of clothing, a baby-grow, was neatly placed next to the candles. A reddish liquid that resembled fresh blood was sprinkled all over the carved objects.

Although the exact purpose of this altar is unclear, CPF members and the police suspect a connection with either a witchcraft ritual, a sangoma or a traditional sacrifice.
