Necklacing investigator overwhelmed in court

The Munsieville mob justice case had to be postponed after an emotional investigating officer walked out of court.

After the necklacing incident in Munsieville on Sunday night 4 January, an investigating officer could not contain his emotions while giving a brief testimony in court the following week. Read the initial report here.

The case had to be postponed after the officer abruptly left the courtroom.

The horrific incident occurred after the community of Munsieville took the law into their own hands following the murder of a resident.

A woman was found murdered in the township on 1 January. Although a murder docket was opened at the Krugersdorp Police Station, no arrests have been made.

Three suspects allegedly fled the scene of the crime after which community members apprehended and assaulted one of the suspects.

The Krugersdorp Police managed to rescue him from the hands of the angry community members and arrested him. An angry mob of residents then decided to punish the other two suspects involved in the murder.

It is believed the outraged residents performed a so-called necklacing ritual on the two victims after stoning and beating them.

The attackers placed a vehicle tyre around each of the assaulted victims’ necks and set it alight for them to burn to death.

“We have lost all trust in the justice system,” said an upset bystander who witnessed the aftermath of the community’s actions.

The news has reason to believe the first suspect whose legs allegedly were amputated in the attack has passed away since due to the extent of his injuries.

The second suspect is still in a critical condition in hospital.

“We appreciate the partnership between the police and members of the public that led to the arrest of one suspect,” the Krugersdorp Cluster commander Major Gerneral Mateisi said in a brief statement.
