Officer dies in the line of duty

A police member from the West Rand Flying Squad will be sorely missed after he died while conducting a roadblock.

A dedicated member of the West Rand Flying Squad will be sorely missed.

Sergeant Curt Oosthuizen, 36, was killed in the line of duty when he was hit by a vehicle on Monday evening 5 January at a roadblock in Honeydew as part of a joint operation with the Johannesburg Metro Police.

Karen du Plessis, spokesperson for the West Rand Flying Squad said it is a very tragic incident and they will miss his bubbly personality.

“He was very outspoken and would help anyone who needed some advice. He was a fantastic person to work with.”

She said his career in the police force started in 2003 and he had spent the most of it at the Flying Squad fighting for justice.

Du Plessis said the funeral arrangements for Oosthuizen, who is from Toekomsrus in Randfontein, still need to be finalised.

“We (the police) will have a memorial service for him at the Krugersdorp Police Station tomorrow (8 January) to celebrate his life as a dedicated police member.”

The driver of the vehicle initially was charged with reckless and negligent driving but it has been changed to culpable homicide after Oosthuizen had died, Du Plessis confirmed.
