Runner badly injured in hit and run

Hulme is recovering after having undergone emergency surgery.

What was meant to be an enjoyable early-morning run turned into a nightmare for Khosa Runners Club member William Hulme.

Hulme and a group of co-runners were running on the R28 past Silverstar at 7am on Sunday morning 12 October when a silver Mercedes-Benz drove into the group, injuring three runners. The driver sped away from the scene.

According to Hulme’s daughter Jolene van Tonder, two of the runners sustained moderate injuries but Hulme was not as lucky.

“My father was rushed to hospital and is in ICU in severe pain. Doctors told us that he had to undergo surgery to reconstruct bone in his arm,” she says.

“The bone in his arm shattered so severely that surgeons have difficulty mending it,” she says.

With the impact a side mirror of the Mercedes with black stripes on it came off and Hulme’s family hopes to track down the driver based on the information engraved on it.

“We also are calling on any possible eyewitnesses that can provide additional information to help police in the search for the responsible party,” says Van Tonder.
