Elderly abuse in the spotlight

Elderly residents were promised that police will prioritise their safety.

Kagiso Vispol Head, Colonel Melisa Bezuidenhout recently gave elderly residents from Kagiso and elsewhere in Gauteng ease of mind when she gave heed to a memorandum of complaints handed over to her.

Hundreds of elderly residents recently marched to her office with placards to break the silence on the abuse of the elderly.

They handed over a memorandum at the office in which they raised safety and security concerns about the vulnerability of senior citizens.

In the protestor’s presence police committed to taking strong action against people who abuse the elderly.

During the march senior residents were encouraged to use the police to their advantage when they feel victimised.

Residents also were asked to assist the police to curb the suspected scourge of crime against elders.

They were instructed to report all cases of neglect and abuse of older persons to social workers or the authorities to make sure that the elderly in the communities are protected.
