Mayor’s office promises to address Sivewright crime

Various stakeholders in Mogale have vowed to act against crime in Sivewright Street, also known as Krugersdorp's drug hub.

The Mayor’s office in Mogale City has vowed to take action after frustrated residents last week handed over a memorandum of grievances relating to crime, drug use and prostitution to them.

This after a three-hour meeting with the representatives of the Sivewright Street community.

Representatives from the SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Community Policing Forum, community representatives and a Mogale City Local Municipality delegation spoke during the meeting led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure, Councillor Maxwell Khuzwayo and Municipal Manager, Dan Mashitisho.

The meeting was convened to address the community outcry over drug and human trafficking as well as prostitution that are rife in Sivewright Street and surroundings.

According to spokesperson for the Mayor, Nkosana Zali, authorities agreed on the following:

• Police will step up its visible policing efforts in the area, including regular patrols.

• The municipality will visit the buildings, retail shops and houses identified by the community as vice and drug hotspots to investigate the claims. Where there are sufficient grounds for closure the municipality will do so swiftly by enforcing its by-laws, as well as appling other measures to ensure that people are and feel safe.

• Community meetings will be held on an urgent basis – within a period of no longer than a week – to give feedback on progress being made by the Multi-stakeholder Crime Prevention Task Team set up by the Executive Mayor last year.

“The parties agreed that other measures discussed will not be placed in the public domain because of their sensitive nature,” says Zali.

“The municipality is equally concerned about and affected by the criminal activities in the area as is the community. We took a vow that we will not yield an inch of our city to provide a liberated zone for drug and prostitution cartels. It is a battle that the Executive Mayor will pursue until we have driven these cartels out of our growing and prosperous city,” he concludes.

  1. Why did they allow it in the first place to strive in our beloved City for so LONG!! And your tip-off (cell) Number provided for the Drug epidemic also proved ineffective, because the info I supplied on names ,cell numbers and exact area’s they are dealing from did not changed in anyway after I send my tip-off to 0833394544 two months ago… Infact one of the dealers guaranteed me that they can assist with “lose’ing” of police dockets if any one should need assistance if charged with any crime… And also offer “Hit-Man” services @ very reasonable prices…
