A group of enraged local residents launched a violent attack against Nigerian nationals in Sivewright Street – also known as Little Nigeria, the drug and prostitution hub of Krugersdorp.
According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Tshepiso Mashale the attack followed after a Nigerian national was arrested for the murder of a South African on Saturday (31 May). The looting of residences and stone throwing continued until yesterday 2 June.
On Monday police were deployed to stop the attacks, but residents fear a further spike in violence.
Nigerians and South Africans have been living alongside each other in Sivewright Street for years and little violence between the groups was reported in the past.
A resident who cannot be identified because she fears for her life told the news that she has been living there for 27 years and that the violence was the first of its kind she had witnessed.
Some labelled the attack as xenophobic while others believe that South African residents are lashing out because they are tired of crime and violence in the area.
By Tuesday (3 June) calm seems to have set in but according to Mashale police officers will continue to negotiate with South African citizens to keep the peace.

Nigerians have taken over the area and known youngsters have fallen prey to drugs and prostitution, and some have deteriorated physically to a point of no return.
Police are in fear of them, and let them be, as some of them cash in on deals.
This is our country and no foreigner should come here and destroy young lives for the sake of their own well being.
Stricter measures are needed urgently to remove crime, drugs and prostitution from our city, even if it requires to remove the Nigerians permanently.
All nigerians should be rounded up and deported back to their own country and those who stay should be burned caus they making our youth into criminals,prostitutes and drug addicts.go give r own school kids drugs,so they can be rubbish like u all r!!! The nigerians are know here in krugersdorp to be drug dealers, murderers,drug and human trafickers, Why must someone first be killed before all the criminals are behind bars, its not xenophobia! Its South africans that are tired of crime! Send the nigerians home for 6 months and see if the drugs and prostitition. All nigerians should be chased out our land. All drug dealers should be burnt caus they corrupt the youth and hav no respect for hard working citizens. As for the police supporting and taking bribes from drug dealers, do u allow your own kids to drug? Their registrations should be taken and reported.
