The Best of the West

Almost 30 schools were involved in Krugersdorp High School's Best of the West tournament.

From being introduced as just a local rugby tournament, the Best of the West since has grown into being one of the highlights on the school sporting calendar.

Over 3 000 feet grazed the sports fields of Krugersdorp High School (KHS) during their three-day-long Best of the West Festival, which saw tough rugby and hockey games being played by almost 30 different schools, some are neighbouring schools and some came from as far as Bloemfontein.

Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, Marketing Director of KHS says that the tournament, which was established in 2003 to celebrate the school’s centenary anniversary, was another great success and the weather played its part.

“Our festival went superbly and everyone really enjoyed it. We are incredibly excited about the growth of the festival and look forward to an even bigger and better festival next year.”

As part of the culture of both the school and the tournament, we will donate a part of the entrance fee from the festival to The Bethany House Trust, a local children’s home.

Lauren is proud to say that the success of the festival is reflected in the current South African School’s rankings courtesy of South African Schools Sport.

“Our boys hockey teams are ranked in the Top 30 teams in the country and our rugby boys have been ranked in the Top 40 teams in the country.”

She says that the aim of this festival is to promote the development of school boys’ sport and to encourage and equip all participants with confidence and belief in their abilities both on and off the field.
