Steer clear of Randfontein Road (R41)

Protest action in Roodepoort is affecting road users travelling from Randfontein and Krugersdorp.

The stench of burnt material hang in the air where the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has cordoned off Randfontein Road (R41) at the corner of Nick Toomey Boulevard in Roodepoort following a protest action in Durban Deep.

Motorists who use the R41 from Randfontein and Krugersdorp towards Johannesburg are urged to find alternative routes to their destinations.

JMPD officials on the scene told the NEWS that they fear for their lives amidst the angry, stone-throwing protestors.

Wayne Minnaar, JMPD spokesperson confirmed that there is protest action, but was unable to elaborate on the matter.

“Unfortunately I am not sure why they are protesting.”

He could not confirm either whether any injuries have been reported despite the NEWS seeing a Netcare 911 Incident Management Unit as well as an Emergency Services Ambulance driving towards the scene.

Social media sites such as twitter are abuzz with news regarding the incident, claiming that the residents of Durban Deep are protesting because they were issued eviction notices.

According to Eyewitness News a man has been shot dead, but police was unable to verify this incident as yet.

Jack Bloom, Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader in the Gauteng Legislature visited the old Durban Deep mine hostel in August last year and released a photo indicating that the people there are living in shocking conditions.

This is the second protest action from Durban Deep residents in less than a year, the other protest was in October last year.
