From dumpsite to park site

Volunteers have taken the opportunity to change a dumpsite into a park site.

A team of six volunteers have taken the opportunity to change the landscape of a dumpsite into a park site in a bid to keep the youth off the streets.

Lebo Motswere, a resident from Boltonia says he came up with the idea after being jobless for some time.

“I realised spending time at home will not make the world a better place and therefore I decided to do something that not only will change the area but also change our youth’s behaviour by keeping them off the streets where they keep themselves busy with illegal acts.

“If I am not going to stand up and do something then no one will – we cannot wait for the government to do things for us.”

While he spoke about the plans for the Boltonia Park five other volunteers who work from 7am until 1pm daily were busy paving the paths, planting flowers and eradicating weeds from the lawn.

“We are planning to build a netball and volleyball court with the permission of Mogale City Local Municipality to keep our children fit. There are also plans for a play park and building braai facilities so that the community from this area can enjoy some family time in the park.”

He says several companies such as the mine company Mintails Limited, Mbombela Steel Design and Space Craft Set & Production Design already have come on board by helping them to achieve their dreams for their community.

Although there are still things they need, Lebo is positive that they will be able to open the park to the community next year in February.

“We still need paint, rubbish bins and old tyres.”
