Fraudulent petrol attendants pinch over R20 000

Three petrol attendants and a cashier were found to be in cahoots with a fraudster opperating in the Krugersdorp area.

A cashier and three petrol attendants were arrested after a sms linked them to a credit card scam at a Krugersdorp petrol station.

According to Krugersdorp SAPS spokesperson Tshepiso Mashale a sms notification reading that a customer had just filled up his car at a petrol station, while he was out of town, raised suspicion.

The manager of the petrol station decided to investigate and found that fraudsters with the help of their cronies who work at the filling station pretend to fill up their vehicles, but in fact did not.

They hand over a cloned card to the petrol attendant, who swipes the card to record the non-existent transaction.

When handing back the cloned card, the attendant slips cash to the amount of the fraudulent transaction to the fraudster. Later on they share the spoils.

The filling station has allegedly lost over R20 000 in cash.

Krugersdorp police urge residents to report stolen cards to avoid falling victim of such crimes.
