Tip-off leads to unlicensed firearm

A full and clear description of the suspect helped the police to track down a suspect with an unlicensed firearm in his possession.

A 39-year-old suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm was arrested by the South African Police Service at a local tavern in Zulu Jump, Kagiso at about 1.15am on 25 September.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya says the police received a tip-off from an anonymous caller about the suspect Vusi Sangweni (39).

“The complainant gave a full and clear description of the suspect. The police then rushed to the given address and upon arrival they spotted the suspect, after which he was approached and searched.”

The police found a 9mm pistol in Sangweni’s possession and he was arrested immediately and taken into custody.

Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, the station commander of the Kagiso Police Station was impressed with the information received.

“We always say that with our communities supporting us with information on criminal activities in their areas, criminals will have no place. This firearm could have been used to rob, rape, hijack or kill someone.”

The suspect appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
