CPF chairperson killed during business robbery

Police are looking for more than ten suspects after a respected resident of Azaadville was killed at his shop in Chamdor.

More than ten suspects are being sought by police after a well-known and respected member of the Azaadville community was killed during a robbery in Chamdor yesterday 25 September.

Muhammed Sheikh, the chairperson of the Community Policing Forum for the area was shot twice when robbers entered his shop just after 1pm.

Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson says the police swiftly responded to the scene in Jacob Street.

“Allegedly the suspects were seen arriving in two vehicles – a blue Volkswagen Polo and a white Toyota Avanza.” He says four of the suspects entered the shop and demanded cash at gunpoint, where after they demanded more.

“Sheikh resisted and was shot in the head. The suspects fled the scene in the two vehicles with an undisclosed amount of cash.”

Sibiya says that Sheikh was rushed to a local hospital where he later died due to extensive injuries.

It is not yet clear what type of firearm was used during the incident but three spent cartridges that were found on the scene will be sent for ballistic testing.

A suspect was arrested and taken in for questioning by police, while the other are still being hunted by police.
