Taxi drivers considered warned

Authorities educate taxi drivers about the consequences of irresponsible driving.

“Irresponsible driving can have serious consequences.”

That was the message Krugersdorp taxi drivers were left with following a visit from the MEC for public safety’s office on Friday 13 September.

The visit came as part of a campaign by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety together with Krugersdorp SAPS and Mogale City Traffic to educate Gauteng drivers on road safety.

The spots they visited include the:

• Krugersdorp taxi rank

• Tarlton taxi rank

• Luipaardsvlei taxi rank

• Munsieville taxi rank

• Krugersdorp train station

• Luipaardsvlei train station

According to Department of Community Safety spokesperson, Thapelo Moiloa public transport accounts for a high number of crashes and fatalities on Gauteng roads.

“Hence the department saw it relevant to take the campaign to those affected the most,” he says.

Commuters and drivers were educated on the dangers of excessive speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities informed the drivers about the penalties and consequences of driving unroadworthy vehicles or driving without a valid driver’s licence.

Drivers at the Krugersdorp Taxi Rank in turn expressed their frustration about the lack of parking in the Central Business District (CBD).

“We have nowhere to park and unfortunately are forced to break the law by stopping in non-designated areas,” a driver explains.

Authorities promised that the matter would be looked into.
