Tembisa awaits its own world-class shopping centre

A major new project by McCormick Property Development promises to be an expansive and sophisticated addition to the East Rand township of Tembisa.

Tembisa awaits its own world-class shopping centre

McCormick Property Development has established a celebrated track record in the construction of property within Southern African rural areas and townships. In February 2018 it announced plans to build a world-class shopping centre in the township of Tembisa on the East Rand in Gauteng, a major new undertaking that will cost R750 million.

The mall will cover a total of 43 000 square metres and is set to house over 100 retail outlets. These include Shoprite and Superspar, already confirmed as the centre’s primary supermarkets, and stores belonging to The Foschini Group, Pepkor, Truworths and Mr Price. At the time of its announcement, McCormick Property Development was also in talks with Edgars, Dischem and Game, according to Jason McCormick, the company’s Managing Director.

Additional features within the centre will range from full-service banks, a day clinic and healthcare facilities, to a food court with a gaming arcade and play areas. Liquor stores and a wholesale butchery will also form part of the diverse mix. The confirmed cost of the development also means that the finished product will boast sophisticated interiors and finishes, many of them inspired by international mall designs, particularly those found in Dubai, Turkey and Morocco.

But commercial prosperity and aesthetic appeal aren’t the only reasons behind the development. McCormick took into consideration the environment surrounding the lot. He states, “We are looking at making this a beacon of environmental sustainability and have a number of features that we are looking to pioneer in this regard… in order to challenge the rest of the development industry to take ownership of the challenges facing the country.” He aims to focus on issues such as energy, the improvement of water quality and efficiency, harvesting and reuse, recycling, and biodiversity within the green-belt area adjacent to the mall.

As of February 2018, McCormick Property Development intends to complete construction of the mall by the first quarter of 2020 but is attempting to move the date to early 2019.
