Soup and bread are handed out
The community came together and played a major role in giving back to the less fortunate
ON Saturday, July 16, Under His Covering hosted a soup and bread outreach in honour of the work Mandela started.
The outreach took place on the corner of Great North and Elgin roads in Pomona.
“We joined hands and reached out to the underprivileged community of Kempton Park. It was a morning dedicated to our only Father in heaven, who laid it on our hearts to reach out and give freely to those in need. We stood together in prayer, handing out bread and pita bread, soup, pap, chicken stew, blankets, fruit, vegetables, water, party packs and clothing for all the underprivileged people and children in squatter camps and on the street,” said founder of the NPO, Carike Pretorius.
Pretorius said there was a big need in the underprivileged communities in our areas and surrounding areas.
“We tend to think our situations in life are challenging. But most of the people we reach out to, do not have a house they can call home, or a blanket to keep them warm. During the past few weeks driving to and fro, I watched the people sleep on the side of the road, going to bed cold and waking up wet,” she added.
Pretorius and a friend, Adel Luus, want to be part of the solution. “We can’t change the world. But reaching out and not turning your back on someone in need might just teach you a few lessons needed. It’s not about what you can do for them but more about what would you do if you were them.”
“There is power in unity. Saturday was an example of standing together and we had a joyful outcome as different ministries joined Under his Covering and people from all over came together to serve the community,” she added.
The special day, she pointed out, was made possible by a number of individuals and businesses. “I would like to thank everyone individually but there are just too many. From my heart, thank you for your support, time, effort, early hours till late-night work, calls made and your open hearts. We are the future. Be the difference, make the choice inside your heart, for it’s bigger than you and I and everyone. Leave a trail, that our children can follow, be the difference, join Under His Covering and help bring change.”
