Kempton Park Rugby club hosts Youth Rugby Day

The Valke Rugby Club hosted a successful Youth Rugby Day, which saw rugby teams from different regions compete.

The Kempton Park Rugby Club hosted the Valke Junior Clubs for an exhilarating Youth Rugby Day on August 31.

The event saw young rugby players from across the region compete in the highly anticipated semi-finals, followed by the fiercely contested finals.

The day was about competition and the spirit, passion, and love for rugby evident among the youngsters.

The presentation of the U18 Christivie Kananyi Memorial Trophy, awarded to the U18 champions from Vereeniging Rugby Club. The trophy is a tribute to 18-year-old Christivie Kananyi, who tragically died on the rugby field a few weeks ago.

James Barnardt, the vice chairperson of the Kempton Wolwe Rugby Club, said he was delighted with the event’s success.

He praised the young players, noting that their enthusiasm and dedication to the sport promises a bright future for rugby in the Valke Union.

“The energy and passion on the field today was electric,” he said.

He added that the future of rugby in the union is in good hands, and we are bound to see some great names emerge from these young talents.

Monique Tenzeldam Ganzwyk, the club’s chairperson, echoed Barnardt’s sentiments, emphasising the collaborative efforts of all the participating clubs.

She thanked the clubs for their participation and collective commitment throughout the season to nurture and develop junior rugby in the region.

“The event was a huge success thanks to the dedication and co-operation of all the clubs involved,” said Ganzwyk.

A special mention went to the Kempton Park Rugby Club, which secured a remarkable league win.

The Youth Rugby Day was a celebration of the sport, bringing together young players, coaches, and supporters.

The tightly contested U11 match between NWU and Suikerbos Rugby Club ended in a 5-5 draw.

“The day will be remembered for the achievements on the field and the strong sense of community and shared passion for rugby that it fostered,” said Barnardt.

Additionally, Barnardt said rugby in the area needs more support.

“To the community of Kempton Park, I say we need more numbers, more support. We need the community to come out in their numbers and support the Valke, the Wolwe and the Kempton Rugby Club when they have home games,” he said.
