Local cricket team remains upbeat despite loss

There were positives despite their 10-wicket loss to Kempton Park CC.

The Actonville Spurs CC PRO, Zunaid Seedat, expressed pride and praised his troop despite their 10-wicket loss – their first in three games – to Kempton Park in the Eastern Premier League on November 12.

Seedat said the side remained upbeat despite being brought back to earth after being dominated by their hosts, who skittled them out for a paltry 64 in the 50-over match.

After winning the toss, Spurs skipper Shaveer Khan elected to bat on a decent wicket. However, the lethal Kempton bowling line-up, led by Kieran Fos (three wickets), Nyiko Baloyi (two wickets) and Zander Smith (two wickets), dismantled their visitors for 64 all out inside 21 overs.

In response, the hosts only needed four overs to reach their target as Wesley Marshall (25) and Jeandre Johnson (51) batted their team to 67 as they won by 10 wickets.

Reserves

Despite decent spells with the bat from Irfan Hanslot (23) and Sayeed Mohammed (23), no other Spurs batsman scored more than 20 runs as they were bundled out for 115, losing by five wickets in their reserves match against Kempton at Lords Cricket Ground.

Keagan Lewis and Wynard Steyn top-scored for Kempton when they took their team to 117 to win the match by five wickets.

Juniors

The club’s third team beat Bedfordview CC by 93 runs when Mohammed Jogee’s 57 runs saw the team reach 206 in their match at Lords on November 11.

They skittled their visitors out for 114 as bowler Neo Nteo played a crucial role with the ball with five wickets, while Doodah Mohammed chipped in with three scalps.

“The club is building towards the future of Actonville Cricket. After a lull from the U19C, we are seeing a growth in the numbers.

“Our junior teams are doing well from U8 to U12. They are the future generation of players, and we welcome the influx.

“The women’s team is another feather in our cap, and together with the partnership created by Actonville, Wattville and Bakerton, in terms of players and ideas, we know we have a formula to grow from strength to strength.

“Cricket ultimately is about fun, although we get serious at times. However, we want the unbridled passion to continue.

“That can only be achieved once players and parents create that aura and culture every club needs,” Seedat said.
