Game of golf kept alive in Thembisa

Tembisa Golf Club is keeping golf alive by involving young people in golf programs.

Tembisa Golf Club is one of the very few golf clubs that is still thriving in Ekurhuleni townships.

Many golf clubs have folded over the years due to various reasons, with the most common one being lack of sponsorships and community support.

The golf club still hosts tournaments and has a development programme that teaches children how to play golf.

The club’s secretary general, Benjamin Monyanyedi, spoke to Kempton Express.

“These kids are in our care and when we take them to the various golf courses, we need money for food and transport so we host these tournaments to raise funds,” he said.

They face various problems as a township golf club.

Their Ebuhleni Golf Course does not have a proper perimeter fence due to vandalism.

They have a challenge whereby community members walk through the golf course when they’re playing, which makes it hard for them to play properly without the fear of injuring someone.

“The municipality has not assisted us in trying to obtain the lease on the golf course. If we had the lease, we would have been able to build a perimeter fence and a bridge.

“We do have people who are willing to help rebuild the golf course but that can’t be done because we don’t have a lease.”

The Lamb Tournament was hosted by the club recently and took place at the Kempton Park Golf Club.

Reuben Motsomotso walked away with the lamb and trophy as the ultimate winner of the tournament.
