The sports development day was meant to target children from the age of two.

The boys and girls were taken through different stations for training to test their skill.

According to the event organiser, coach Zweli Nkutha, the soccer day was aimed at young boys and girls.

“The purpose of the day was to start a development programme for young children so that we can also have a division for them in the club,” said Nkutha.

He added that the day also served as a recruitment drive and parents were urged to register their children for the development division because the club does not have any teams in the six to 10 age group.

“Many parents brought their children to introduce them to the sport.

“We set up various stations, which allowed young players to get familiar with ball handling, dribbling, trapping and passing.

“We hoped that the activities would grab the interest of the children. We want them to come to the club for training in their extra time,” Nkutha said.

He added that by the time the young development players reach senior teams in the club, they will have already been equipped with the knowledge and techniques needed to build stronger teams.

He also said training a player who has not been introduced to the basics at a young age is sometimes problematic.

He said it was important to introduce young boys and girls to soccer at an early age.

“Teams at the club start from U13.”

Nkutha said having to teach a 13-year-old player how to trap and pass a ball is more difficult than when they are taught these skills at a younger age.

“Development divisions will nurture the talent, the interest, and also instil the discipline from a very young age,” he said.
