More than 1700 runners in Ekurhuleni take part in marathon

This was the first marathon and half marathon hosted by Rand Road Warriors since the start of the Covid-19.

Runners took the streets of Edenvale when they participated in the annual Edenvale Marathon hosted by Rand Road Warriors.

The June 19 race was held in partnership with StaminoGro and took runners through the suburbs of Edenvale following the route of the 2020 event.

This was the first marathon and half marathon hosted by Rand Road Warriors since the start of the Covid-19. It saw over 1700 runners participate in the half marathon and full marathon.

Besides hosting the long-distance runs Rand Road Warriors also held a 5km fun run for less avid runners.

Proceeds of the fun run will be donated to Edenvale Ferals and The Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.

This year the marathon was won by Proud Chauke of Fourways Road Runners in a time of 2:33:48.

Second place went to Karl Quinn of K-Way Jeppe (2:51:52) while Anthony Mondlane of AEL Athletics took third (2:52:29).

The first woman to cross the marathon’s finish line was Sandy Ashfield of Fourways Road Runners with a time of 3:22:27.

She was followed by Manda Gomes from Nedbank Running Club Mpumalanga (3:24:22) and Caroline Cherry of Varsity Kudus (3:24:47) in third.

The half marathon was won by Philani Buhelezi from Murray and Roberts in a time of 1:07:36.

Second place went to Derocious Makhobalo from Bedfordview Country Club (1:11:09) while Delight Mutonga of Waterfall City Athletics Club placed third (1:14:52).

The first woman to cross the half marathon finish line was Melissa Jansen van Vuuren in a time of 1:24:33.

Second place went to Elise Meyering from Maverick Athletics Club (1:29:53) and third to Zandile Menze of Mr Price (1:30:00).
