Netball star to enter SPAR Virtual Women’s Challenge

"I think it's time we all talked about GBV and put our words into action. The SPAR Women's Virtual Challenge will increase awareness of the problem."

Lentsa Motau is one of the rising stars in South African netball.

She is captain of the Mpumalanga Sunbirds and last year was a member of the SPAR Smileys, locally based members of the SPAR national netball squad who played in the Telkom Netball League in preparation for the Netball World Cup in Liverpool.

Motau, who is Mombela born and bred and who works in the marketing department at HoĆ«rskool Nelspruit, has been appointed the Mpumalanga ambassador for the SPAR Virtual Women’s Challenge on September 26.

People who would normally have entered one or more of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series are being encouraged to take the Virtual Challenge, where they choose their own time, their own distance and their own route on September 26.

All they are asked to do is to share their experience on social media.

For every entry, SPAR will donate a food parcel to a survivor of gender-based violence (GBV).

“I am very excited about the idea,” said Motau.

“I think it’s time we all talked about GBV and put our words into action. The SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge will increase awareness of the problem.

“I also think, in these strange times, when we are unable to do things we want to do because of the coronavirus, it is important to find alternatives,” she said.

“So you can’t take part in a 10km race or 5km fun run the way you would normally do.

“Just do your own race, walk or jog or run and let everyone know you are doing it.

“It’s important for us to keep active and to be patient. These times will pass eventually and we will be able to play netball or to run or walk together again. In the meantime, get out there, get some exercise and know that you are one of many thousands trying to make a difference.”

Entering the SPAR Women’s Virtual Challenge is easy.
