Panorama athletes shine on national level

All four have big dreams for the future

Four learners from Panorama School obtained their Gauteng colours in their respective sports.

Head boy Mpumelelo Mdluli (18) was the provincial soccer team’s defender and helped the team to a 4-1 victory in the Winter Games in Durban. Mdluli said the team was also preparing for the Summer Games later this year.

The young man said his team brought home severale trophies in 2019 and that he himself had been elected as his school’s sportsman of the year for the second year in a row. Mdluli also plays rugby and cricket and participates in athletics. He dreams of one day becoming a professional soccer player.

Captain of the Gauteng netball team and goal defender Nqobaile Magagula (16) told Express they were victorious against the eight other provinces at the national championships from June 30 to July 3.

It was Magagula’s first time in Durban. “For me, the Western Cape and Mpumalanga teams were the greatest challenges.”

Alongside her was goal shooter Temoho Ndlovu (17). The two Gauteng netball stars are known as the twins and both have dreams of competing in netball professionally once they matriculate.

Magagula wishes to some day try out for the Protea team. Ndlovu, in addition to wanting to be a professional netball player, wishes to become a pilot.

Both girls have been playing the sport for at least five years. They also sing in Panorama’s school choir.

Zuan van den Heever (18) held the scrum half and fly half positions respectively in the Valke rugby team and competed in the South African rugby play-offs. The Valke team beat three other provincial teams, namely the Griffons, Griquas and Pumas.

Van den Heever plans to compete in rugby league later this year.

He told Express he also enjoys studying welding at school and wishes to qualify in this skill as he enjoys building braais and bomas in his spare time.

He’s been a rugby player since Grade One.
