Proud Norkem High team returns from Spain

The team did their school and country proud with their African spirit and singing.

After the success of winning the Sir Pierre tournament undefeated and without conceding a goal, Norkem Park High School’s football team took part in the Costa Daurada Cup in Salou on the Spanish coast.

The team lost 0-1 in the final against la Selva del Camp from Spain. The boys had numerous chances but could not put the ball in the net.

A breakaway goal with minutes to spare ended their Spanish dream.

The team started the tournament with a 2-2 draw against la Selva del Camp and then defeated AC Milan Algeria in the second round robin game.

They faced stiff opposition from YPS, a composite team from the USA, winning 2-1. Both goals were scored by Kabelo Mokoena, the captain.

This saw them finish the group stages in second place on goal difference.

They faced a tough no-nonsense Spanish team UDE Canonja in the semi-finals and put on a superb display of football, beating the other group winners 2-0 with both goals by Phumlani Sello.

The team did their school and country proud with their African spirit and singing.

The tour ended with a tour of the Camp Nou, home of Barcelona Football Club and a cultural city tour of Barcelona.

The school would like to thank its overseas sponsors for this life-changing opportunity.
