Norkem Park High School teams win Drapers Cup

Ten schools in each age group took part in the tournament and the Norkem boys took the gold medals in each age group

Norkem Park High School’s u-19 and u-17 soccer teams competed in the annual Rynfield Drapers Cup at Willowmoore High.

Both teams were the overall champs of the tournament.

The Rynfield Drapers Cup is an opportunity for high schools on the East Rand to compete against each other before the season starts. Ten schools in each age group took part and the Norkem boys took the gold medals in each age group.

The u-19s won their group with victories against Wordsworth High, Willowmoore High, St Francis College and Ashton International before kicking out Liverpool College from Actonville in the semi-final with a 3-0 win.

The u-19 team members are now preparing for the annual Waterstone College Sports Festival which will take place over the weekend of March 23 to 25. They are seen here with their coaches.

The final was a rerun of the group game against St Francis and the boys ran out with a 2-1 victory. This was the only goal the team conceded in the tournament.

Grant Mathabathe, the regular first team keeper, played as a striker and managed to score four goals with three assists to prove his versatility.

The u-17s had a more difficult group but finished tops and went on to beat Curro Serengeti on a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals. They then managed to take gold with another penalty shoot-out against Wordsworth High in the final.

Captain Tsephang Masoga powered the last spot kick over the hapless Wordsworth keeper to clinch the gold double for the school.
