Residents lace up to help raise funds

The day started with registration and each member received a t-shirt with a race number to wear.

Members of the community flocked to the Olifantsfontein Sports Ground on Sunday, during the official launch of the inaugural fun run of the Matsheko Early Learning Centre.

The aim of the fun run is to raise funds.

The day started with registration and each member received a t-shirt with a race number to wear.

It was a day filled with fun for the participants of Matsheko Early Learning Centre’s fun run, who varied from children to the elderly as they took part in aerobics in order to keep active. The teams could then run or walk through various streets of Olifantsfontein before arriving back at the starting point.

The fun run started and finished at the Olifantsfontein Sports Ground. The winners of the run were awarded a trophy and gold medals.

The second-runner ups were awarded silver medals and the third-placed runners were awarded bronze medals.

A team of 10 women was also awarded Perfect Choice hampers.

The day was then divided into different sporting activities like netball and soccer games, where the staff of Matsheko Early Learning Centre met with their opponents.

Organiser and founder of the Matsheko Early Learning Centre, Ms Matilda Lebepe could not hide her satisfaction at the large turnout.

“I am extremely excited and motivated about the whole event. It shows that we are doing something positive for the community of Tembisa. Our aim was to encourage members of the community to keep fit at all times, including young children. Today, we are living in an environment where we are attacked by so many chronic diseases, it is then imperative for the community to exercise. By just walking a few metres, one could make a difference in his/her life,” said Ms Lebepe.

Ms Lebepe said the fun run was also part of raising funds to buy land for the centre.

Matsheko Early Learning Centre caters for 168 children in Hospital View.

Ms Lebepe turned her whole house into a daycare and pre-school centre.
