Norkem beat Sir Pierre in local derby

The match was decided on a penalty shoot out

NORKEM Park High School’s first soccer team beat Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld for the third consecutive year in the annual Kemp Classico derby at Norkem Park High School on Saturday.

The match was decided on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time and Norkem won 3-1 .

First team coach Andrew Gifford said Norkem’s goalkeeper, Kabelo Kganakga, was in superb form and saved two penalties, resulting in Norkem taking the trophy and bragging rights for another year.

“It was a very tactical game played by both sides and the game stayed at 1-0 till the last 10 minutes, when our keeper collided with Sir Pierre players in an attempt to clear the ball. He lay injured on the pitch when the ball broke free and Sir Pierre capitalised by scoring,” said Gifford.

The teams will now focus on the Ekurhuleni Cup semi-finals against another local rival, Rhodesfield High.

The results of the other matches were: Norkem U/14 lost 0-1, U/15 won 3-0 and U/17 won 2-0.
