Norkem Primary hosts sports festival for the less fortunate

The 14 football and 14 netball teams will compete in friendly matches throughout the weekend

NORKEM Park Primary school will host its annual Norkem Festival from May 22 to the 24th at the school.

The festival provides an opportunity for football and netball teams to play games for the weekend, and no team is knocked out.

The festival has been running for 13 years since 2002 and started with only seven football teams.

The event now includes 14 football and 14 netball teams.

Four hundred players, who are mostly from disadvantaged backgrounds, attend the festival.

Norkem Primary provides beverages and food for players for the duration of the festival at no fee.

The children are given an opportunity to compete in a well-organised, professional environment, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.

Role models such as Pitso Mosimane, Isaac Shai, Rowen Fernandez and Helman Mkalelele are invited every year to encourage and motivate the children.

The focus of the festival is to be a tool for the mass participation of children in a healthy, structured environment of friendly competition.

The festival hosts players from as far as Phalaborwa and Cape Town.

The Norkem Park learners house and entertain these learners for the weekend.

Creating an opportunity for both sets of learners to experience different cultures and lifestyles and form friendships.

The school is in need of assistance through partnerships with companies or individuals that will support Norkem Primary by adding value to the child and their experience of the Festival on an ongoing basis.

The partners should share Norkem’s commitment to uplifting the less fortunate through sport.

The participating government and private schools are: Norkem Park, Kempton Park, Shangri-La, Alston, Cyrildene, Klopperpark, Wendywood, Crystal, Tlamatlama, Northridge, Observatory Girls, and Schiettocht.

Over 90 percent of the learners in these schools are from previously disadvantaged communities.
