Norkem Park wins Rynfield Drapers Cup

The school’s first team won 2-1 against Wordsworth in the final

NORKEM Park High School’s first football team started on a strong footing when they won the Ekurhuleni Rynfield Drapers Cup at Willowmore High School in Benoni recently.

The tournament hosted 16 of Ekurhuleni’s top football schools and was the ideal warm up for the school league in the second term.

The school entered its first and U/17 teams in the tournament. The U/17 team had mixed results and used the tournament to develop young players for the school’s first team. They beat Ashbury, drew with Willowmore High and lost to Petit High.

The youngsters did well considering they played against these schools’ first teams.

The first team beat Tercia King 2-0,Woodlands College 8-0 and Maranatha 3-1 to progress to the quarter finals.

There they faced Boksburg High’s B team and beat them 5-0.This set up a semi-final encounter against Boksburg High A, who they demolished 4-0.

The final against Wordsworth High was a tough affair as both teams had played five games in one day and the squads were stretched to their limits. Wordsworth started strong and scored first. Chasing the game, the Norkem boys pulled back to make it 1-1. A few substitutions by both teams saw Norkem score a second goal to hold off Wordsworth, winning the final 2-1.The team scored 24 goals, conceding only two.

The school’s U/14s and U/15s are off to the Brebner High tournament in Bloemfontein during the holidays and the first team is preparing for the Waterstone College Festival the weekend after Easter.
