Sewing project in Birchleigh creates livelihoods for many

The sewing project has grown over the years and has successfully groomed a few women to become entrepreneurs.

STEFAN Hough, Tsohang Basadi sewing project machine mechanic, writes:

“Our country and especially Kempton Park, is experiencing the implications of an economic slump with all its peculiar ramifications. Aspects of unemployment and scarce food are becoming normal topics in our daily discussions.

What is serious about the circumstances is that desperate conditions in one’s house tend to drag us down emotionally and psychologically.

A good remedy for such situations is making a drastic decision to do something positive to make life better for you and your family. For example, you can start your own business to support yourself and your family in this tough economic climate.

Women who made the decision to go the entrepreneurial way to survive are the Tsohang Basadi sewing project ladies from the Birchleigh area.

These women decided to improve their sewing skills and produce beautiful garments, including clothing and table cloths, which they can sell to generate an income for themselves. Of course, they also make these for their families to use.

The pride and joy these ladies feel in their project is evident on their faces every Tuesday when they meet at the Birchleigh Dutch Reformed Church to create more garments.

About Tsohang Basadi:

The Tsohang Basadi sewing project has grown over the years and has now successfully groomed a few women to become entrepreneurs.

The Birchleigh Dutch Reformed Church has for many years been operating a small community project in the form of teaching domestic workers and other unemployed women in the area, and some from Tembisa, how to sew.

The women receive training on dressmaking with the help of church member Gwen Kruger and other volunteers from the church.
