You are kidding yourself if you think we are free

At the shop I had to make sure somebody was not jamming my remote when locking my car

I decided to spend Freedom Day at home and to, among other things, catch up on the news.

My home looks like most in the suburb: we live behind burglar bars, safety doors, panic buttons, electric fences with armed reaction on speed dial. This got me thinking: this is not freedom.

Later that day I took a drive to buy a newspaper and had to dodge a couple of ill-disciplined drivers who were simply ignoring the rules of the road, maybe because they drive without driver’s licences or they were fortunate to be in a position to buy one without having to learn the rules.

At the shop I had to make sure somebody was not jamming my remote when locking my car and I had to pay a car guard to at least try and take a photo if someone stole my car before I returned. This is not freedom.

On my way home I was vigilant to ensure that nobody was following me and that I would not be hijacked. At home I entered cautiously as house robbers might be waiting for me to return. This is not freedom.

The newspaper was full of horror stories about crime and the only thing common about all these, is that the police will never bring any of the perpetrators to book.

You are kidding yourself if you think we are free. The only ones who are free are Jacob Zuma and his loyalists, who are untouchable above the law while under protection of the state, and the myriad criminals who daily practise their horrible trade as there is no capacity they will ever get caught to reap what they’ve sown.
