Metro should focus on water leaks

What municipalities fail to share is the current levels of water losses experienced

ALDERMAN ALLAN SAULS of Swart Street writes:

Citizens are called to save water due to limited water supplies. Citizens are very mindful of limited water in South Africa and their immediate surroundings.

Furthermore, citizens pay prime tariffs to have running water to their properties.

One cannot imagine citizens wasting water when it is such a costly commodity.

One should ask the question, why does the municipality not consider saving water by ensuring water leaks are managed effectively.

What municipalities fail to share is the current levels of water losses experienced. Such water losses are extremely high and the municipality turns a blind eye to these losses.

Municipalities should be encouraged to save water losses by 15 per cent. This will bring about substantial savings. Attention should be given to infrastructure that negatively impacts on current losses. Focus should be given to calls logged by citizens, ensuring standby teams give them immediate attention.

Citizens log water leak calls which remain outstanding for weeks on end.

The municipality should be held accountable for water losses and not citizens, because citizens have to pay for water losses or abuse on their properties.

It does not make sense to punish those who used water carefully and for the correct purposes.
