Election posters: where they are allowed and where not

This is vandalism and the council should clean it up

PIETER writes:

I noticed that all over the city the ANC is sticking its posters on permanent fixtures such as mini-substations.

It is an eyesore and makes the streets look even more disgusting.

I tried calling the municipality to complain and come and clean it but was put through from one extension to the other.

I stay in Birch Acres and feel it is not right to stick it on substations. If the other parties can use lamp posts, why can’t the ANC?

This is vandalism and the council should clean it up. Please, can you get the council to do something about it.

Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, replies:

When the ANC Ekurhuleni Region was contacted to inform them of the wrong act, they promised they would ensure wrongly placed posters would be removed as they were not aware of that.

They indicated they thought it was a mistake as they knew the guidelines.

The metro has communicated the following guidelines to political parties contesting the upcoming elections regarding election posters:

1. Posters can be put up free of charge but a removal fee per poster will be charged to the political party if posters are not removed within 14 days after the elections. The previous fee was R37 a poster.

2. Posters shall be affixed to electrical light standards and affixed receptacles by means of a suitable cord and no metal clamps or wire.

3. Posters shall not be used to advertise a commercial event.

4. Posters shall be affixed at least 50m away from an intersection.

5. A maximum of three posters will be allowed per standard or per post.

6. No posters shall be displayed for longer than the period extending from the beginning of the date of proclamation in the Government Gazette of an upcoming election to the end of the 14 days after the date of such an election.

7. No election posters shall be affixed or nailed to trees.

8. In the case where the standards or posts to be used are situated on the road island or median, four posters may be allowed and may be affixed back-to-back about 2.4m from the ground.
